Support groups consist of people who have experienced depression (or who care for someone with depression). Members of depression self help groups provide each other with support and exchange information about depression and methods for coping with it. The groups are usually small and run by a 'consumer' but a mental health professional may be involved.
Support groups may not be suitable for everyone with depression. However, there is some evidence that support groups can be helpful [1]. It can be a relief to know that you are not alone in your experiences and that you can talk to someone who really understands what you are going through. Support groups are also a way of obtaining information, increasing your social network and obtaining support outside of normal working hours.
